What does motivational speaker Shane Johnson do after Hiking Across America to raise awareness about Veteran suicides? How about competing in the worlds toughest foot race known as Badwater in Death Valley, CA. Shane's mission is to use this race as a platform to help raise awareness and 3 million dollars to complete the new Orlando Fisher House.
For members of our Armed Forces, retirees, veterans, and their families, the Fisher House program offers shelter and support during a medical crisis. Fisher Houses offer a comforting “home away from home” while a loved is receiving care in an unfamiliar environment. This special support is even more important to a family during the most stressful time – the hospitalization of a wounded or injured service member involved in military operations like Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom.
These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $360 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.
Shane has begun training for this especially brutal race and building the support team needed to accomplish possibly the greatest challenge of his life.
